Review of National-Level Malaria in Pregnancy Documents in 19 PMI Focus Countries

With support from the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), MCHIP conducted a review of malaria in pregnancy related policies, guidelines, training and supervision materials in 19 PMI focus countries (Angola, Benin, DRC, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Madagascar, Mozambique, Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe). The review aimed to:
- Understand what is included in national-level reproductive health (RH) and malaria documents, which are disseminated to health workers in these five countries, on prevention and treatment of MIP;
- Ascertain whether these documents are consistent with World Health Organization (WHO) guidance; and
- Determine how each country’s documents are harmonized between their respective RH and malaria control divisions.
The review resulted in a report on findings and recommendations that are country-specific, as well as common discordant guidance from across countries and overall recommendations that can be applied beyond the countries whose documents were reviewed. MCHIP is collaborating with PMI and the Roll Back Malaria (RBM) Malaria in Pregnancy Working Group to disseminate the findings and recommendations of this review, which are expected to be particularly useful for assisting countries with the process of revising and adapting their policies, guidelines and resources for consistency with current WHO guidance; especially, as malaria endemic countries in Africa are considering the implications of the April 2013 WHO policy briefing for the implementation of intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy using sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (IPTp-SP).
